Research in Action

Helping answer why colon cancer is rising in younger adults.

St. Luke's Health System is one of only two hospitals west of the Mississippi participating in a major Dana-Farber Cancer Institute study examining the increase in colorectal cancer among adults under 50. Tournament support has helped fund this work.

Researchers are examining lifestyle, medical history, genetics and other possible influences to better understand what may be driving the trend.

Screen at 45 Recommended colorectal cancer screening now begins at age 45 for average-risk adults.

The Legacy Continues

From the Brian Olson Memorial to the Colon Cancer Classic.

Brian Olson died from colorectal cancer in 2000 at age 39, leaving behind two young sons. A longtime Hewlett-Packard employee and active community member, Brian inspired friends and colleagues to create the tournament in his memory.

The first tournament was held in 2001. The event has now reached 25 tournament years, with the 2020 tournament skipped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Colon Cancer Classic carries that history forward with a broader name and mission while preserving the friendships, remembrance and sense of purpose that have defined the event since the beginning.
